Insomniac’s New Game is for…Facebook?

I’m not sure whether I “Like” this idea or not.

When the name Insomniac Games comes to mind, images of a Lombax running around, smashing things to pieces with a wrench and a small robot on his back or Earth being devastated by the Chimera are not far behind. However, one thing that is probably not going to be on your radar when thinking about Insomniac is Facebook. Well that’s about to change. Insomniac has announced that one of their next games is a scifi RPG called Outernauts, and it’s being made for Facebook.

So just what are Outernauts? They are an elite force sent into space to capture and train aliens to aid in the battle against the enemies of United Earth, such as space pirates, corporations, and the “Ancients”. You know, the usual stuff. All the while this game will build around traditional RPG elements, and oh yeah, it’s on Facebook.

Insomniac has been pretty tight with Sony over the years, and at last year’s E3 they announced [Overstrike] which would be going multiplatform. Outernauts will be the first PC based experience for Insomniac, and perhaps the fact that it will exist on a social network shouldn’t matter. Insomniac is more than just a competent developer, which means they have the skills to pull of a pretty decent game no matter the platform. It is interesting that they’ve chosen Facebook, but President and Founder of Insomniac, Ted Price seems to think it’s a good opportunity, and thus far he hasn’t let us down. Insomniac is looking to bring Outernauts online sometime this summer.
