Say It Ain’t So: Timesplitters 4 Is Shelved

Crytek’s boss says “we are not working on it.”

In 2009, which seems like an eternity ago, Free Radical, the team behind the Timesplitters series, was bought by Crytek. At the time, Free Radical was working on two pretty awesome games: Star Wars: Battlefront 3 and Timesplitters 4. Neither of which have seen the light of day since Free Radical was absorbed into Crytek, and it looks like light may never be shed on the latter of the two projects.

Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, said “I love the idea, and I wish we’ll work on it, but currently we are not working on it.” Well I suppose it’s at least something that he says he likes the idea. One of the problems he points out in his interview with CVG is that he’s not sure the fans and the community are there anymore, and considering that it’s been seven years since Future Perfect was released, I honestly can’t blame him.

I’m definitely behind the idea of a fourth installment of the time traveling, chimp fighting, wise cracking first person shooter, and it seems despite the fact that Crytek is not currently working on it, Yerli indicates that there could still be some hope, possibly in the form of a Kickstarter campaign. “Kickstarter is a concept we thought about seriously… we’ll see. Time will tell.” Here’s hoping time will tell us good things.

Concept art from Timesplitters 4

Not long after the purchase of Free Radical, concept art was leaked of characters for the upcoming fourth entry in the Timesplitters series. IGN even had a banner on some of their pages that showed a spoof of Halo 3 with a chimp in Master Chief’s armor. I would love to see how all of that would have come together, but as Yerli said himself “time will tell”.
