Paper Beats Rock: Media Molecule’s Latest Project Is Tearaway

The creators of innovative creation have created another creation.

Media Molecule. Some of you may have heard this name, others probably not, but it’s definitely a name you should pay attention to. The developers behind the LittleBigPlanet are known for their out of the box creativity and bringing that sense of creation into their games. LBP was all about giving players the ability to change the world and experience it almost while it was being created out of the random bits of stuff that made up Sackboy’s universe. Their next creation is no different, except very different at the same time. For starters, it’s made exclusively for the Vita. Now while you recover from that little piece of information you should probably check out the announcement trailer for Tearaway, shown off at GamesCom this week.

When the Move first came on the scene, LBP 2 already seemed like a great place to use the device, and Media Molecule jumped to implement it. MM is pulling out the stops with the Vita, using every bit of technology the handheld has to create an immersive and creative experience. Tearaway blends it’s papercut art style with interactive elements that you might expect from a DS game rather than a Vita game, yet it fits perfectly. It’s very much a MM game where you the player are key in how the story works. You’re not just running along, pressing X to advance dialogue, you’re an integral part of the game.

The big thing to take away from this is that MM is developing it for the Vita. This isn’t a port from PS3, this is a complete experience crafted for PlayStation’s latest portable. The fact that this developer is taking advantage of the hardware is an interesting move, which could spark interest by many more in the future.
